
Regarding tiles covering Caspian Sea (N37E051 to N44E049), I thought it's height would be 0, but if the real height is -29m then they should not be removed from known-hgt.txt. But they are no longer available from SRTM or ALOS. The other tiles removed in my patch are in open sea areas, so their height should be 0 and can be IMHO safely removed. My SRTM directory contains the listed files and they show a constant height of -29m as stated in the linked page.
My understanding is that you don't have those files, but you should have. A non-existing file is treated like a file with height 0.

Attached patch deletes some hgt files which correspond to ocean areas from known-hgt.txt file. They just lead to confusing warnings when running mkgmap to generate a map with DEM.
