Hi Joris, an alternative is to use the tag anywhere in the style, something like direction=* | tag2=* | tag3=* {echtogs "Aha"} I thought about disabling the "unused tag removal" when echotags is used, maybe I really should do it to avoid this confusion. Mkgmap ignores tags in the OSM source that are not referenced by style rules or are needed by explicit code.
You can add to the list of tags read by adding line to style/options, eg: ... extra-used-tags=direction ...
