Yes, I (and some others on this list) ve seen the same behaviour. If I leave the calculated route, then the distance has to get bigger than ~260m before recalculating starts. Tested on my etrex Venture. If I use the original garmin maps, then recalculation starts nearly immediately at entering the wrong route. So it has clearly to do with the mkgmap created maps.
