Ah, but you can see the difference with a suitable .typ file :)
As much as I hate checking in binary files, I wonder if it would be useful for there to be a standard/default .typ file that makes osm maps a bit more useful, perhaps just showing the different road types differently (esp track vs service vs trail and maybe even unpaved, plus cycleway), and perhaps has a few more POI icons, and for this to be in the sources along with a description of what it is. When there's adequate free software for .typ files in the glorious future, this could be swapped out for the source description. I have been avoiding .typ files due to the non-free tools issue, but am wondering if that's rational.
