Thanks Andrzej, Your method works. First create the map without --transparent and install it in Mapsource. Then set the transparency flag on the img with gmaptool. This method doesn't show the ovm lines underneath anymore.

if I use --transparent in combination with some lines that are also present in the overview map levels, they are visible at lower zoom too
This is probably only problem of Mapsource, you see overview map because detailed map is transparent. I get similar results when using cgpsmapper.
I think you need background object to hide overview map. Try for example create non-transparent map and then only set transparency flag in img.
