Well I'm not really sure but even --overlap=5000 seems to severely slow things down (although I'm not seeing the error messages this time).

java -Xmx6000m -ea -jar ~/garmin/utils/splitter/splitter.jar --overlap=50000 --no-trim --max-areas=255 --cache=cache --mapid=6324000 --max-nodes=1200000 etc.
So this might work in specific areas but not worldwide.
