This exhausted the 2G of heap space I had allocated when I tried it on a map of Ireland. Are there known practical limits I should try to stay within?

I'm afraid the reason is the code which joins the shoreline segments. The code constructs a new way when two ways are joined (because the shoreline may be used in other relations, e.g. a state border). This may use large amounts of memory. The obvious optimization is to create a new way only when "original" ways are joined. I will post an optimized patch later. Best wishes Christian
