ASTER elevation data

I came across this via Slashdot: http://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/ http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2009/jun/HQ_09-150_ASTER_Topographic_Map.ht… Quoting the press release above: "Previously, the most complete topographic set of data publicly available was from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. That mission mapped 80 percent of Earth's landmass, between 60 degrees north latitude and 57 degrees south. The new ASTER data expands coverage to 99 percent, from 83 degrees north latitude and 83 degrees south. Each elevation measurement point in the new data is 98 feet apart." This is good news for us North Europeans. The north limit of the SRTM is a few hundred meters north from my home, about 30 km north from the Helsinki coast. Can anyone who knows the topography business take a look at this data and write scripts for translating ASTER elevation data and OSM with mkgmap? Performance

Hi all, I've not used mkgmap for a good while and am really impressed with all the features that've been added in recent months. I'm currently trying to create a map from a GB planet extract, and performance seems much slower than I remember. I've split the extract into six parts with splitter.jar (I'm using some big route relations so can't split it any further). The first .osm (36Mb) has been chuntering away for an hour and a half and the .img hasn't been produced yet - is this normal? The command line I'm using is: java -Xmx1000m -jar mkgmap-r1067/mkgmap.jar --style-file=/path/to/ cyclemap/ --route --net --no-sort-roads -c template.args The style file is reasonably complex and contains numerous 'set' instructions, plus a handful of relation 'apply's. My system is an Intel Mac mini, OS X 10.5, 1Gb. cheers Richard

cannot compile custom style

Transliteration and lower-case

I am having problems getting transliteration and having uppercase letters at the same time. If I select code page (--code-page=xxx), I get uppercase letters but no transliteration. I tried --lower-case=no, but that does not work... With no options (i.e. no --code-page), transliteration works but resulting map is in lowercase letters. This works in MapSource but I get only the upper-case letters as abbreviated street names/poi in Garmin Mobile XT. Is is possible to get capitalization to work after transliteration (where everything now is in ASCII anyway)? Thanks, Ivan

Recommended "stable" version?

Hi! According to the Wiki page, the last version recommended as reasonably stable is 858. As I needed some particular improvements, I am using 1001, which works reasonably well. However, there are some weird glitches in my map that may be caused by problems in my preprocessing or in mkgmap with equal propability. So an update to a later version might in order but quite a number of the posts here seem to indicate that many things are very experimental so this might be a change for the worse at the moment. My map is not intended for routing, so will not profit from any features to that end, I am rather hoping for general improvements of processing and reliability. So the question is: Are there any plans to work towards another recommended reasonably stable version? Or do any of you have a personal recommendation for a build that in your experience should not cause trouble? thanks Nop

FW: --TDB option for ways only map doesn't show up in 6324000.img

I am attempting to create a routable, transparent map of footpaths to overlay on a separately drawn transparent contour map which shows hydrography and land cover. Those two maps would lie on top of a proprietary road map. The Windows batch file I use to call the compiler follows: java.exe -Xmx512M -enableassertions -jar "c:\program files\mkgmap\mkgmap.jar" --route --net --transparent --product-id=53 --mapname=07250732 laurels8.mp pause To generate the TDB file I then run: java.exe -Xmx512M -enableassertions -jar "c:\program files\mkgmap\mkgmap.jar" --max-jobs=4 --tdbfile --product-id=53 07250733.img 07250732.img pause My problem is that if laurels8.mp contains a full set of contours, hydrography and land cover my 6324000.img file shows a corresponding 07250732 quadrangle, but if laurels8.mp consists only of ways, there is no quadrangle for 07250732. Therefore, while I can see the ways in MapSource, I can't use MapSource to select the ways only maps to combine with my other maps. I get the same result if I compile laurels8.osm directly from a JOSM file. If this isn't the right forum for this question, I'd appreciate a link to the right one. Thanks in advance. Hilton

name in style file

Hello, I use the following line in my points style file : natural=peak {name '${name}'} [0x661d resolution 20] I have the appropriate 0x661d icon in my .TYP file. The icon is well displayed on my Garmin, but not the name of the peak. The osm file has the right information in it : <node id="423283143" lat="45.1969885" lon="3.724827" version="3" changeset="1631916" user="persei" uid="117980" visible="true" timestamp="2009-06-26T04:57:46Z"> <tag k="name" v="Mont Bar"/> <tag k="natural" v="peak"/> <tag k="ele" v="1168"/> </node> I thought the name of that peak would have been displayed on the map. Is it right ? I use a Garmin Oregon 400T Second question : Is it possible to have the elevation displayed on the map too ? What do I have to write in my points file to succeed ? Something like : natural=peak { name '${name} ${ele}' | '${name}' | '${ele}' } [0x661d resolution 20] ?? Thank you. Francois --

Unfortunately I've not been able to find a better solution than putting as first row in style: motorcycle=no {set motorcycle=yes} It works, but the resulting map is only good for cars, not for motorcycles... Good Night.

cannot route to some POIs

Another weird behavior. Some pois are not properly routed from the road. I've checked the data and it seems to be valid. I am thinking that this is probably because the POI is too far from the road. But it doesn't necessaryly follow. Unfortunately, motorcar and motorcycle share the same access bit in IMG...
