Preprocessing OSM for mkgmap

I'm afraid I've fallen a few weeks behind on this mailing list, so apologies if I'm not aware of related development. I know the style branch is attempting to address some of the issues. I got frustrated with setting tags based on existing tags, problems with re-ordering, and having to re-specify long expressions for slightly different results. Instead of moaning, I've done something about it, and created a geographical-tag manipulator, or geotagman for short. It's hosted on SourceForge, and you can read about it on its Wiki page[1]. It's mostly complete, though I'm still clearing up one or two missing features before it can claim parity with mkgmap itself. The advantage is that we can separate out the knocking into shape of our OSM data from its presentation as a Garmin map, which I think has to be a Good Thing. And it could be useful for other OSM users, too. Hello Ben, I sent the same remark for Ireland last night (mkgmap-dev, Digest vol 19, issue 11). The latest version I found which is able to generate sea mutlipolygon is 1512. Your data should be sufficient. I hope this will help you agaisnt global warming. Regards, David

Text format for TYP files

This may be slightly off-topic, I think that it could be useful to have a repository of TYP files and associated style definitions. For example, a TYP file would be necessary to define a custom line style for displaying bus route information on a separate map layer. It seems that http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/genTYP is the "de facto" text format of TYP files. According to the home page, the latest release was about 3 years ago. The web based TYP file editor at http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/ is more recent, but its text output does not seem to be able to export all the definitions that the editor is able to create. Some of the source code is available, but there are very few comments (some in Chech) and no example of usage. I was not enough of a Perl expert to figure out how to input the binary TYP data for decompilation. For what it is worth, I tried the following, but my call signature of the as_string method is obviously wrong. #!/usr/bin/perl require "source.cgi"; undef $/; $_=<>; print Garmin::TYP::as_string($_); I wonder if there are any other tools that make use of the genTYP format. A textual format like genTYP's (with XPM graphics) would be ideal for a TYP file repository. It would be easy to change parameters (such as Family ID) and copy definitions between TYP files with any text editor. Any thoughts? Would it be worthwhile to reimplement the genTYP txt/TYP encoder/decoder in Java? It should not be too hard, given that an XPM library already exists at <http://www.bolthole.com/java/Xpm.html>. Also the related bug, where more than one element is created with a 'continue' under the same conditions. This is a moderately extensive fix, so watch out for regressions.

Multipolygon success

The Inarinjärvi multipolygon that I defined yesterday was rendered fine, except for one minor detail: A lake within an island was incorrectly named Inarinjärvi. I have now removed name:* from the multipolygon relation. Hopefully the code will do the right thing and copy the name:* from the outer coastline as appropriate. Marko

Bridleway=Fussweg?

Hi I'm in the UK. On my Oregon 300 when I query a item with the red pin It display a few idiosyncrasies: Bridlepath are displayed as 'Fussweg' An area of landuse=residential as 'Ort' These appear to be language confusions but I can't see an specific option to specify a language & the country options should default to UK & GBR. Also barrier=fence/wall etc are displaying as 'lines' & landuse=grass as 'area' Is there a way to give them their specific titles? I'm Using v1560 but had the same problem with 1505. java -Xmx512M -ea -jar mkgmap.jar --remove-short-arcs --description="Bath & Surrounds" --gmapsupp "Contours.img" --generate-sea:polygons --transparent --style-file="c:\dwgs\Programs\GPS All\Garmin Profile" --family-id=42 M000002.TYP 63272002.gz The input file is from teddynetz http://openstreetmap.teddynetz.de:81/latest/osm/63272/ Another problem - In Setup>Map>Map Information Select Map. I'm trying to get a meaningful name to display for each map. I've used --description. Is this the correct option? Hello, After many tries from latest version 1560 to 1494, I cannot use sea generation with multipolygon option after version 1512. Something seems to be broken or you might forget to explain how to use it with latest changes. I made my test with Ireland OSM file from geofabrik.de. David

Anti-island check confused; defined a monster multipolygon

Mark, WanMil, It seems that the anti-island check got the piecewise defined coast line of Inarinjärvi (Lake Inari) wrong. I now defined a multipolygon for the lake and its about 700 islands, hopefully making no mistake in the process: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/402543 Some islands contain lakes, and according to the wiki should include those in the relation as well. Here is an example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/31257120 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=68.8415&mlon=27.5145&zoom=13 The coastline of Lake Inari is to the west of that lake. I will have to check if these lakes look fine, and also that these lakes or patches of water will not inherit the name from the relation. I will add the lakes on that island to the multipolygon, as a test case. JOSM is getting slow at this. Does anyone know a JOSM trick that would allow me to select exactly everything that is bounded by the current selection? There is natural=water near the coastline, on the mainland, and I do not want to add those as role=outer. Marko
