Searching cities

Hi, there. I've recently discovered OpenStreetMaps and its possibilities for Garmin devices through mkgmap. I've loaded the maps in my own device and I'm pleased to say that they work really good. The only real problem is when you want to enter and address in order to go there: the city is found as you touch, but the street search does not work at all. I don't know whether you're already working on this or not. I'm a computer programmer, so I could give a hand in case it would be needed. -- Baltasar

polygon-size-limit inside polygons file - large work to implement?

Well I recently noticed, that some super detail mappers, started to map landuse=grass or leisure=garden for supersmall areas. E.g. a 2x4m private garden, or a 1mx10m long strip between both sides of a road. Yuck.... I would prefer to keep my maps clean, and get rid of that garbage. Could there be a polygon-size-filter that works also for resolution=24, and that can be setup much more aggressive? Especially for gardens and grass, I don't need small private ones, but would like to keep big public gardens and grassfields. So could there be an implementation like the following for the polygons file: {set mkgmap:polygon-size-limit=24:30 ; 23:20 ; 22:15 ..} which overrides the default setting? That would be absolutely great for combating all the micromapping junk! -- keep on biking and discovering new trails Felix openmtbmap.org & www.velomap.org

question about routing

TYP/Style files

Hi, i'm very new to this list (just joined) and i have been searching around how to easy compile TYP/style files to use with my osm garmin maps. I can't find any good guide pages or anything about this, only a few tools to use. Is there a tool that i can use to create a style package with all the files (info, lines, options, overlays, points, polygons, relations, version) or is the only way to create them manually and put everything manually in them? To create TYP files i find TYPViewer and http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi very useful, but i can't find out how to get everything working on the map in either BaseCamp or in the GPS. I have created a TYP file that has a lot of stuff, but seems like Garmin BaseCamp and GPS doesn't agree with me on some of the "Line"/"Way" stuff i've added. Stuff like pier, cycleway, footpath and private roads looks all the same for me, but they shouldn't. I have no idea how to fix this. I don't really understand if there is a difference between style packages and TYP files. / Kristoffer

How to avoid coarse maps

Hi! I am trying to make a map based on default style with levels = 0:24, 1:22, 2:20, 3:18 At zoom level 0 the map looks ok: http://files.mkgmap.org.uk/download/144/level0.JPG But at zoom level 1 and up it is very coarse: <http://files.mkgmap.org.uk/download/145/level1.JPG> http://files.mkgmap.org.uk/download/145/level1.JPG Optimization options --reduce-point-density=NUM --reduce-point-density-polygon=NUM seem to have no influence with NUM values between 0 and 10. How can I control the smoothness of the map?

[PATCH v1] Fix housenumber assignment for streets with refs

The patch strips the ref shields from the labels when comparing street names with addr:street tags of OSM elements. So also streets with sheidls can be used for housenumber search which was not possible before. Please note: the patch works only if the mkgmap:display_name is set to the raw street name in case the street has a shield. See the patched lines file. The patch also changes address search a bit. Please try and post your findings. @Steve: I found a comment in MDRFile.addStreet that tells me that the name including the shield is used for MDR7. I have changed that in the patch because I didn't understand why the shield is included. Can you check your comment and remember about your intention? ;-) WanMil

British National Grid

I have updated my OSM-compatible files of the British National Grid (http://www.rogercalvert.me.uk/OSM/GBGrid) by removing 100km grid squares which show nothing useful (such as empty sea), thus reducing the file size by about 35%.
