Hi. On page 16 and 17 in the styles manual the part opreration is mentioned. What is the correct syntax to split a string by colon : ? I tried something like {set name='${name|part:"::-1"}'} to get the last portion after a : . but that was not allowed. Regards Karl

Fix and augment sort definitions

Hi Gerd In the resource/sort/cp*.txt sort definitions, I notices that all but cp1252.txt/Western European and cp65001.txt/unicode don't handle "#" correctly and cp1252.txt/Western European and cp1254.txt/Turkish don't add expansions for all their double-characters. Patch attached that fixes these problems, makes the layout consistent, adds useful information to README and removes the id2 current value, which just gets out-of-date. All the id2 values are incremented if appropriate. The "#" fix might be the reason why searching for street names starting with # didn't work for code-page=0 / format6 Adding the "ß" expansion might be a step towards resolving the problem with searching and --lower-case that the subject of discussion a year or so ago - I can't find the thread. branch mdr2 now implements Huffman encoding

Hi all, my outlook account was locked, don't know yet why. I am writing this from an alternative account while waiting for Microsoft to fix that issue... Building Huffman tree

Hi Gerd Some thoughts on this: Dividing the \0 count by some factor between 3 and 6 should reduce the overall length of the strings. This is because there will be 0..7 bits free after each string To make the canonical tree: after using the standard algo to make a normal tree, just remember the count at each level and chuck the tree away. Then simply allocate chars, in decreasing frequency order, in previously levels, from root (and maybe high to low), much the same way as the decoder handles levels 6 and above. It might be that if you start with ordered list when building the initial tree, and get the inequalities right for when sums of lower levels are equal, you get the canonical tree, but this is just a guess. Highway shield and length parameters

Hi all style users I've noticed that the code and style manual differ in the meaning of the highway-symbol max-length parameters. The manual says the text is truncated to this length. In the code: if the text is longer than the length it is left untouched. No shield is added, spaces are not removed and it is not truncated. Should I fix the manual or the code? Version mkgmap-r4839 was committed by gerd on Thu, 30 Dec 2021 surrogatePair.patch by Ticker Berkin (slightly modified) "handles UTF16 surrogate pairs so that mkgmap style filters substring and highway-shield give correct results, the LBL trimming leaves the correct amount and neither end up with 1/2 a character. I've looked through all the substring operations and I don't think any others will cause problems. There might just be a few str.length() and str.charAt() or other indexing that might need attention but this would require a lot more searching. Hi all, those who have original garmin maps for the PC and know how to compile display tool: Update to r575 or higher. Please execute the program MdrDisplay on the global index of the map (e.g mdrmap.img) like this: java -ea -Xmx6800m -cp d:\display\dist\display.jar;d:\mkgmap\dist\mkgmap.jar test.display.MdrDisplay MDRMAP.img --print=16 > mdr16.txt (fix the paths to the two jar files, replace the ; by : on linux) The expected result is a rather small text file (~32k) or a crash. Please reply with your results, possibly zipped. I am esp. interested in crashes, but good data also might help to understand a few missing bits. This is about a compression algorithm that is used in some old Garmin maps and I plan to implement that in mkgmap to reduce file size of the global index file. I've attached a sample output for the Adria Topo 2.4 map. Gerd

MDR header length and sections

Hi Gerd Some of the old maps don't have Mdr sections after 19 and 29. Also some code didn't spot it should test after Mdr19, so Summary, Display and Check could give errors. I've added logic to stop getting sections after all the header lengths I've found in the various samples. Patch attached. Ticker

generated gmapsupp incompatible (?) with eTrex Legend

hello, i am using mkgmap to generate gmapsupp img from an osm file, then uploading it via serial connection to eTrex legend (b/w version). i noticed the following behaviour: - gmapsupp file created by mkgmap does not always show in the device (sometimes even the map metadata is missing) or there are glitches (lines across the whole screen on some zoom levels) - same file opens just fine in gpxsee (https://www.gpxsee.org/) - if i open tdb and matching .img file in qlandkarte (no longer being developed), select submap and export to gmapsupp, the new file is larger and the issues after uploading to garmin device are gone what sometimes helps (with file coming out of mkgmap) is uploading with a speed of 9600 bauds (as opposed to 115200). here's an example: - mkgmap gmapsupp.img - 302592 bytes - qlandkarte gmapsupp.img (same map) - 786432 bytes i was checking a diff but could not make out anything (too many differences). haven't tried older versions of mkgmap or checking out other tools yet. could you please advise? thank you, jose ps: i can share both map files if it helps in any way.
