POI indexing, problem with label 0x2800

Hi, POI types 0x28xx are usually treated as labels, there is no icon for these POIs, only label text. CGPSMapper doc describe these POI as "Region name". I'd like to use these POI for house numbers. Problem is, that mkgmap indexes labels! It results in big increment of img files and index file. I doubt these objects are searchable, probably all this indexing is only a waste of space. I have found code in MdrUtils.java, which adds labels to index. I think this can be removed. And maybe you can add POIs in range 0x64xx - 0x66xx, they probably are searchable. There is an increase in LBL subfile, I haven't found code responsible for this. There seems to be a section LBL5 called "POI index", maybe labels goes there too? -- Best regards, Andrzej

the verbose option and order of options

Hi all, I think the handling of options in mkgmap is a bit too tricky and has confused many users (myself included) in the past. One obvious problem is that mkgmap has so many options, another is that the order matters, and a third is that the effect of the options differ for different input files (osm format, polish (.mp) , type file . I think about a rather simple change so that it prints the active options for each input file when the verbose option (or -v) is given, and also once for the combiner step This would be a rather simple change and probably helps in most cases. I also think that the --verbose option should print a hint that shows this link: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgmap/dev#Enabling_Debugging Even better might be to warn about options which had no effect or which (probably) occured in the wrong order Samples : java -jar mkgmap.jar -c split_out\template.args --latin1 --bounds=bounds.zip --index --family-id=3212 3212.txt (wrong order of options, input files are processed with default values) java -jar mkgmap.jar --housenumbers --bounds=bounds.zip *.img (these options have no effect when processing img files as input) java -jar mkgmap.jar -description=my-map -c split_out\template.args --gmapsupp (not good when template.args sets description for each input file) This change is not so easy to implement and it might produce false warnings in special cases. Is it possible to keep the POI IDs constant?

Hi, My device has a very useful feature of remembering the last POIs I have used. The problem is that every time I build a new map, the POIs seem to change the ID and some random POIs appears on my recent list. I assume the POI IDs are assigned independently from the IDs in OSM, which causes them to change on every compilation. Would it be possible to assign the POI IDs based on the OSM IDs to solve this issue? Best regards, Alexandre

POI without name

Hi all, I've noticed that my Oregon shows a lot of "unnamed" attractions, e.g. when I search for Attraction | Park or Garden. It seems that the device shows all points wth type 0x2c06 here (maybe also others), no matter if they are indexed or not, if at least one of them is named and therefore indexed, maybe not all but those in the same sub division of the map. Maybe there is a flag somewhere which would tell the device if that should be done or not, but I did not find that yet. Any hints are welcome. In my case most or unnamed and since the entries are sorted by distance I have to scroll to find those with a name or type the name if I know it. To avoid that you can probably use different types for named and unnamed POI. Another option might be to place unnamed POI in their own sub division. Gerd

amenity=restaurant and search index

Hi all, I've postponed the problems regarding --lower-case and looked at other problems in the index. I've noticed that some restaurants do not show up where expected. I am not sure if this is caused by wrong data in the index or simply by style rules, probably both. For example: I have a small test file containing some amenity=restaurant, but none has cuisine=international (0x2a06) , still the search menu shows an entry for that category but finds no entry. On the other hand, many restaurants are found where not expected, for example in category pizza I find all 0x2a00 The default style contains rules to add POI with type 0x2a and it seems to work for many of them, but at least these last two rules look suspicious: amenity=restaurant & cuisine=* [0x2a13 resolution 24] amenity=restaurant [0x2a00 resolution 24] Why do we use two different types for these "mop up" rules? address search and the --lower-case option

Hi all, during the last days I tried to find a solution for the problem that my Oregon is (often) not able to find road names which contain "ß" , like "Außer Ort" or "Büßlinger Straße". If I search for Au the name "Außer Ort" is listed among many others, but when I type Auß the device says that something like "not found, change search criteria". When I type "Auss" it is also not found. This problem only occurs when I build the map with option --lower-case, without that option the name is safed as "Ausser Ort" and search works without problems. I found one work around : A change in the resources file resources\sort\cp1252.txt allows to search for ß when --lower-case is used but will not work without that option. Now I wonder if anybody has a map which contains the names like Außer Ort and is able to search this name typing Auß ? Gerd

draw-priority – influence rendering order of two maps on a device

I successfully build a Garmin map using mkgmap which contains the boundary. If I load the map on the microSD card which already contains the propietary map, the map gets rendered but *below* the propietary map . I tried the following to get the additional map to be drawn on top: - - Rename the file by adding "aaa" at the beginning of the file name. - - Insert "aaa" at the beginning of the description (--description option of mkgmap). - - Insert "aaa" at the beginning of the family name (--family-name option ). - - Reduce number of --mapname option (I tried --mapname=10000000). - - Try different draw priorities using --draw-priority. I tried 999, 30 and 48 without any success. - - Build one gmapsupp.img containing both the Garmin Topo map and the additional map. java -jar mkgmap.jar --output-dir=../merged/ --gmapsupp ../input/garmin-topo.img ../output/additional.img Even if I change the order (additional.img before garmin-topo.img), nothing changes. Do you know at which location inside a gmapsupp.img file I can find the draw priority of the Garmin Topo map? If I know that draw priority, I can use a higher priority. Btw, I use mkgmap 3909. How to name junctions in crossroads

Perhaps this is not the correct list for my question, but: Yesterday I was confused by my Garmin device while driving down the A560. At the end I had to turn left into "Europaallee". I assume because of node 243623175, my device told me to turn left into "Wingenshof" which is the opposite direction. My intention tells me, that I would have to swap the names of nodes 123377330 and 243623175. Is this correct? Would it have an impact on people that want to drive from Wingenshof to A560? Would they be advised to follow Europaallee first before turning left? Bodo
