Address search for Rostock doesn't work

Hi all, the address search for Rostock (germany) doesn't works for me. In BaseCamp I see the correct region "Rostock, Rostock, DEU", but no street can be found there. In my Garmin GPSr (Dakota-20) no city with the name Rostock exists - peculiar. I have build new bounds from scratch, based on the current europe extract from geofabrik. Questions: - Does the address search (for Rostock) works for someone ? - How is it possible to verify the bounds and the street entries ? - What's the general procedure to hunt down address search issues ? Problem transferring maps from Mapsource

I don’t know if this has been raised before as I am new to the list, but when I try the latest version of mkgmap (r2328) with the latest version of Mapsource (6.16.3) I am unable to transfer maps to a device from Mapsource. I am using Windows 7 service pack 1, 64 bit. If I overwrite with an older version of mkgmap (r2168) I no longer have the problem. I have tried the older version R2316 and got the same problem. I have no problem installing the map into Mapsource, and it shows fine when it is in there. But as soon as I try to select the tiles that cover the British Isles to transfer to device; I get the error as shown in the screenshot attached. I wanted the later version to try out the pre-compiled sea polygons feature, as I have had problems with flooding when combining data previously. The command in the batch file for compiling the maps is. . . java -Xmx5000M -jar mkgmap.jar --index --tdbfile --route --keep-going --generate-sea=multipolygon,close-gaps=1000 --mapname=56710001 --family-id=42 --family-name="ukmapnik" --series-name="ukmapnik"--description="OsmUKMapnik" --remove-short-arcs --add-pois-to-areas --nsis --drive-on-left --overview-mapname="OsmUKMapnik" --style-file=mapnik_styles/mapnik *.osm.pbf uknik.TYP If anyone can shed any light on the problem I would be grateful. New clip box functionality for splitter

I am interested in contributing to the development effort of mkgmap and have come up with what should be a simple project to begin with. I am thinking of adding a clip box to the splitter so that any nodes outside the box will be ignored, and any lines, polygons will be clipped to the clip box (I have chosen clip so as not to confuse it with the bounds option). This has come about as I have been generating a map for Sri Lanka as I am going on holiday there in October. Cloudmade has a separate extract for Sri Lanka, but is very out of date. To get up-to-date data I have to download all of Asia from Geofabrik and process the whole lot, loading into Mapsource, then selecting the few tiles that cover Sri Lanka and transferring them to device. By supplying a clip box I could give a lat,long combination for the bottom left and top right corner; and clip to that – in the case of Sri Lanka the splitter would probably give me a single tile to process through mkgmap. It would also mean I do not need Mapsource to produce a gmapsupp.img file at all. If anyone knows why I should not try this project please let me know. A question: Is there a preferred development environment system for mkgmap or splitter on Windows, such a Eclipse or NetBeans??? Regards, Geoff.

in some of the new versions of either osm, or pbf extensions , the routing is now broken , because of the number of ways has reached 32767 espeically from http://download.geofabrik.de/ also now the new version of australia-oceania is now on a 0x200 and the tile splitter , now spits the dummy at xmx700 Stephen

resolution, level & levels

I'm confused about the way resolution, level and levels interact. I started with a set of supplied styles (actually from Marco Certelli's CreateIMG package) which used resolutions 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 & 24 for various kinds of roads. I wanted to change residential roads to come higher than tertiary roads (resolution=22) but lower than footways & tracks (resolution=24), so I changed them to be at resolution=23. Unfortunately this didn't work -- they appeared and disappeared at the same time as the the resolution=22 tertiary roads. I then changed the levels specification from the supplied levels = 0:24, 1:22, 2:20, 3:18, 4:16 to levels = 0:24, 1:23, 2:22, 3:20, 4:18, 5:16 and everything sprang into life working as desired. This behaviour was consistent between BaseCamp and my Oregon. The documentation in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgmap/help/style_rules had led me to think (though I guess it doesn't say so explicitly) that level & levels were meaningful only to the Mkgmap compiler, and were converted to resolution in the final Garmin format map files. As a result I was surprised that changing the levels specification had any effect at all, since all rules used resolution rather than level anyway. Could anyone shed any light on this behaviour? Lower-cased Roman numbers in street names

Hi, I noted that street names change from e.g. "Rua Dom Pedro II" (OSM) to "Rua Dom Pedro Ii" (BaseCamp, Garmin unit), from "Rua João XXIII" to "Rua João Xxiii", etc. Does mkgmap apply some text processing rules that cause these changes? Hermann

Using zip files

I'm sure this is a simple problem, but I can't find the answer in the wiki or elsewhere. I seem to remember reading that one can access precompiled bounds and precompiled sea direct from the zip files without unpacking them. Issue with boundaries

Hello to all, I have problems using precompiled boundaries. It does not work to me. Do I understand it right: if you have a directory "bounds" with boundaries then mkgmap options "--location-autofill=bounds --bounds=bounds" should set the style file variables mkgmap:admin_level2, mkgmap:admin_level4 and so on? I've tried both generated by me and taken from navmaps.eu. I don't have any error messages or alike but It seems mkgmap cannot find the boundaries and the variables mkgmap:admin_levelx are always empty. What works for me is getting data from addr:xxx. But if I comment out the corresponding rules (so that there are only mkgmap:admin_levelx rules active) my elements don't get city and country set, for example. The "bounds" directory is in my working directory where I compile maps. The problem is not corrupt boundaries or similar. They are ok. Mainly I work with my home town Bad Düben, Saxony, Germany. I've read a lot here on the list but it doesn't really get me forward. I use last version of mkgmap (r2328), but the former version did not work for me either. As style I use the default shipped with mkgmap. In one thread I saw a tip of WanMil to look at the log and search there for strings like "N 617233095 ;;;;;;Bezirk Innsbruck-Stadt;;Tirol;;AUT;;" but I don't have in my log file such a text or anything else related to LocationHook. Probably I miss something very stupid but can't see it. Any advices are very appreciated. Maxim Düster

Attention -- mkgmap Built maps with data as of today or newer need NEW: Bounds and Sea Files!!!! and need to be put under ODBL

Just a warning, so you don't mess up the license. All maps with data built of today or later, need to be put under odbl. So change your license terms accordingly. Also of course the old boundary files, and/or coastline/sea files, need to be new and under odbl. So for right now, best don't download new map data, and be careful not to violate any license until new boundary and sea files are published (under odbl), and mkgmap has changed (a switch??) the license information it adds to be compatible with odbl. Which actually leads to the next thing? Does anyone know, what mkgmap created maps actually are? I assume the .img are a database (except the overview map, because it doesn't contain any information that could classify it as a database), and hence need to be put under odbl. But what is the map overall? (eg a setup.exe, or a gmapsupp.img which contains a .typfile, published under a different license?) Should we post this on legal talk, or does anyone know how the odbl license changeover, affects mkgmap created osm maps? -- keep on biking and discovering new trails Felix openmtbmap.org & www.velomap.org
