mkgmap heap space errors and overlap in splitter

Hi mappers, for a couple of days now I am struggling with the combination of the --overlap value in splitter, holes at tile-borders (woods etc.) and mkgmap heap space out of memory errors. I am trying to process france. I have learned that without setting any --overlap value (thus default) I need little more than 1000M to process france in mkgmap. But this gives me a lot of faulty tiles. Those tiles usually miss "color" where e.g. wood should be. I suspect this to be all large multipolygons, mostly wood areas. Increasing overlap-values in splitter helped me for other countries. But as soon as I increase the --overlap value to e.g. 3000, memory needs in mkgmap go up quickly causing heap space errors. For many countries like germany, overlap=10000 worked fine with no tile errors and no memory problems, although memory needs are quite high. Just for france, even XMX8000M does not work, there seems to be no limit that works. Values for max-nodes (usually 200) and max-area (usually 600000) does not seem to have any influence on this. I am never experiencing memory issues in splitter, just mkgmap. Any ideas anyone what stupid error I may be doing? Are any other parameters in splitter or mkgmap relevant for decreasing heap space? Wishlist: Better multipolygon error reporting

Hi, Lake Päijänne is probably the largest multipolygon relation in Finland, even after I split some named bays to separate natural=bay polygons or multipolygons. There is one error that I have not been able to figure out. JOSM is not complaining anything if I extract the relation from finland.osm.pbf with Osmosis and load to JOSM. The whole area is fully within the boundaries of my tile 63240005: 2012/07/05 21:37:39 WARNING (MultiPolygonRelation): 63240005.osm.pbf: Multipolygon http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1239779 [natural=water,type=multipolygon,name=Päijänne] contains errors. 2012/07/05 21:37:39 WARNING (MultiPolygonRelation): 63240005.osm.pbf: Polygon 4611686018427683240(7P)(31081024[7P]) carries role inner but lies inside an inner polygon. Potentially its role should be outer. Could the message mention a coordinate of the faulty polygon? I am guessing that this message is due to the Garmin map resolution (about 5m). It would be nice to identify the problematic polygon, to confirm this. Or, maybe the JOSM Validator is not checking for inner polygons that are completely within another inner polygon. Marko

Location of Elements

Is it possible to access the latitude/longitude of elements in style files? I am thinking in terms of using different defaults for un-named elements on a regional basis. E.g. perhaps 'burn', 'brook' or 'beck' instead of 'stream', depending where it is. Roger

benefit of --drive-on-left

Hi, what is the advantage of using --drive-on-left? I think routing shouldn't be influenced, because oneway=yes should be obvious and on normal roads/ways there shouldn't be any difference at all. Henning

--make-all-cycleways and access

i'm trying to use the --make-all-cycleways option in my maps and just can't make sense of the access tags this option sets to highways. the original highway gets bycicle=no, which makes sense. the new "virtual" cycleway gets access=no. is that a bug or can i just not figure out what it's good for? micha

style rules

Hello, mkgmap (r2309) doesn't parse the highway rules with the file polygons. How can I draw a polygon for the rule 'highway=* & area=yes' (used in OSM to describe 'square' or 'plaza') ? Thanks Michel

Hi Wanmil, i have a question regarding the precompiled sea tiles: I normally use the generate-sea-options in conjunction with a coastline-file. If i use the precompiled sea files instead, do i still need the coastline-file? Regards, UliBär

Hi, yesterday started a interesting discussion about "How should/could OSM (de) present Garmin-maps". I think many mapdevelopers read this list. So if you are interested...it would be nice to participate. There are already some interesting thoughts, but maybe you have also some ideas. The "problem" is, that many users doesn't know how many maps exist and how to find the map they need. mkgmap & house address search

Does OpenStreetmap + mkgmap include house/building address search? I've tried both pre-compiled maps for both Mapsource and gmapsupp.img and even built my own maps using: java -jar mkgmap.jar --route --remove-short-arcs --add-pois-to-areas --index --gmapsupp *.osm.pbf The output maps work great on the GPS however I can not search for a house street address: 928 Fraser Street, Kamloops BC The house address seem to be missing on both on my GPS and inside Mapsource on PC. However I can find the address on the OpenStreetmap online map website.
