"board ferry" mystery not a mystery after all

Hello list, The current ferry routes don't tell me to board the ferry (I've written about that before). However, if I use ferry type 0x1b instead of 0x1a, my Garmin Nüvi shows a nice boat icon on the track, it tells me to "board ferry". The other behaviour so far seems identical to type 0x1a. So I would kindly recommend the attached one-bit (it's even the least significant one) patch, changing the ferry route type from 0x1a to 0x1b. Algorithm for rendering sea

I was wondering how the sea is generated in those recent sea polygon patches. Since I don't understand Java I haven't a clue! Even so, I was thinking of what might be a reasonable way to do it. If there is coastline present within the bounding box then rapidly "grow" the coastline from the bounding box until you are close to coastline. Then grow the coastline more slowly (smaller overlapping polygons). At this point maybe a test could be done to see if a closed coastline way will end up completely inside a proposed polygon and if it will it's time to make the polygons (temporarily) smaller. In this way the sea should end up "shrink wrapping" itself around land. Maybe it's already done in a way like this but as I say I wouldn't know. I also thought it might be an idea to build a "convex hull" of the coastline whereby a a rough outline of the coast is built first so that all land lies on one side of this outline. This could be done by sampling the coast and checking no lines joining pairs of coastline points intersect with another coastline point (which would mean the possibility of coastline on both sides of the line segment). That could be a way to rapidly fill in most of the sea area. All the best, Cliff

Selectable maps on gps

I can't seem to find the right options so that I can output more than one map within a gmapsupp.img file and have those individual maps be selectable with the ticks on the gps itself. For example, if I have file_A.osm and file_B.osm how can make these two separate maps show up separately on the gps so I can select them? Thanks in advance, Cliff

splitter error using --cache option

Garmin Edge 705 bug in bicycle routing

Hi all, I just updated http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgmap/routing/issues#Bad_bicycle_routing with an example where the bicycle route from A to C is much longer than the routes from A to B and B to C. I guess but have not verified that this is because of an access restriction that I added near B. It seems that the routing engine in Garmin Edge 705 ignores cycleways in the middle of the route on longer routes. If bicycling is prohibited on the major road, then you may be sent to a long detour, ignoring the cycleway running next to the major road. I may check this later, by temporarily reverting the bicycle=no on a section of the major road. I still have a copy of the finland.osm that I used for the test. Marko

extended types and java buffer overflow

Using the same style-file as before but changing many streets from 0x?? into 0xe10?? I needed to reduce by 70-75% the maxnodes settings of the map so that it compiles without error. Is there possibly a bug or is it normal that using extended types forces you to use much smaller tiles? Anyone already using the extended types and also seeing this problem? For some countries I needed to reduce maxnodes via splitter to 150.000 so that they compile fine. Even Denmark ran well on 400.000 before. I am a bit buffled about this. Overlays and Relations work fine now, I had forgotten about some patches that I was using previously and stopped by upgrading to 1140.
