Hi, some observation about the default style: 1. Coastlines are shown as thin blue lines, is it possible to render coastline as polygon, where sea areas are shaded as blue. A work around I did before is to manually edit all sea-areas and then add a natural=water tag (bad data edit) . 2. Administrative boundaries clutter the map. They appear like roads and can be confusing while driving. Suggestion is to make the admin boundaries thinner. amenity=embassy not handled by mkgmap ?

Hello, First, I would introduce myself: I am living in New Caledonia and I bought an Garmin nüvi 755 GPS because I have the possibility to import the data from openstreetmap.org. I have to travel to New Zealand next month, and during my last stay there I was sad of using my non-graphic GPS to report my position to an paper map.... especially during driving ;-) In the meantime, I got the virus and I added plenty of data to New Caledonia and I compiled an gmapsupp.img for NC. Now I noticed that an POI amenity=embassy added in OSM is not available in the produced gmapsupp.img (both with mkgmap v1303 et 1311) Is this an error in mkgmap? How can I make embassies correctly display in Garmin maps? Some of them are just tagged as amenity=public_building and display correctly on the Garmin map. --index crashes on an otherwise successfully rendered image

Mkgmap sometimes crashes with when trying to build a gmapsupp including index using an existing (prerenderd) image. I don't know the Mkgmap verion used to render the source image, but it's pretty recent. If this version is needed then I'll look it up this evening. I hope someone can have a look at this. The style system is augmented with 'continue' and 'stop' commands that can be used in style rule files to facilitate the generation of more than one map object (line or POI) from a single OSM object. mdr address index with gmapsupp and macroadtrip installers

I might have stumbled onto part of the problem with the Ireland map for addresses. When I ran mkgmap with --location-autofill=3 I got the following debug info: Locator City Map contains 5 entries Locator Places Map contains 8717 entries Locator City Map contains 6 entries after resolver run 1 Still unresolved 8716 Locator City Map contains 8722 entries after resolver run 2 Still unresolved 0 Most of the "cities" in Ireland are tagged as villages or hamlets, etc and we do not have postcodes outside Dublin city. If this is a problem, could the --location-autofill be switched to look for villages and hamlets too to help fill in the addresses? Cliff

Don't let action rule execute its actions if its type isn't going to be used

Felix, As you know, action rules execute their actions (like add tags, etc.) whenever their expression is true. But is that the right behaviour if the type associated with the rule isn't going to be used because of the continue action? I'm not sure that it is so I have made a little patch that stops action rules from executing their actions if the type to be returned isn't going to be used. I don't know if it helps with your current issue or not but perhaps you can try it out. The patch also adds back all the resolveType() methods without the pre argument so that Steve's test suite isn't borked. Mark

Also adds --reduce-point-density option to set the error distance used by the Douglas Peucker line simplifying filter. Patch by Johann Gail. Trivial mods by me to options text and also to disable the DP filter when --reduce-point-density=0 is specified.

Mapsource Recalculation Tries

Currently with mkgmap created maps (just like most other maps) Mapsource tries 3x to find a route when using the autorouting tool. I have noticed that using Netherlands Onroute Fietskaart Mapsource tries much harder to find a route - sometimes it restarts 15 times until it has found a route. It would be great if we could have the same behaviour. I don't know at all where a parameter for rerouting tries is placed inside the maps, but just if someone finds something, this would be interesting to improve routing (on each successive try, Mapsource lowers a bit its rigorosity of the route quality, but better a route than no route).

[PATCH v4] remove bogus nodes

v4 - added --remove-bogus-nodes option to turn on this feature. Even though the reduction in nodes is fairly modest (typically 5-10%), I believe that this could be useful for those routable ways that share many points with non-routable lines or areas. A lot of roads do share points with neighbouring areas and in those cases, this option should remove a lot of bogus nodes. Whether that translates into improved routing in that region is yet to be proven. ---------- v3 - now duplicates ways so that any structural changes to the way made while processing a line/road will not affect the original way and so each map object generated from the original way will see the full set of points in the way. Duplicating the ways appeared to have no noticeable effect on the run time when processing the GB map. -------- v2 - avoid assertion when more than one routable way is generated from the same OSM way ------- With the recent reversion of the Table A breakage, it's now useful to post this patch for wider testing as it no longer causes my Nuvi to barf. What it does is remove routing nodes from ways that should never have been put there in the first place. Without this patch, a routable way will have a node for each of its points that are shared by any other way (whether the other ways are routable or not). For example, at the moment, if a way shares its points with a boundary line or shape, each of those points will become nodes. From the routing point of view, that's (essentially) harmless but having extra nodes does take up space and must slow down the routing calculation. It therefore makes sense to remove the bogus nodes. What this patch does is defer the processing of all of the points/lines/shapes until after their types have been computed. Having computed the ways' types we know what's routable and what isn't so nodes only need to be created where routable ways meet. That's the theory, in practice, it produces slightly smaller maps. Whether it actually improves the routing quality is yet to be determined. Obviously, the gain you will see depends on how many bogus nodes are in your maps. All feedback welcome. Mark

Clinton - thanks very much for checking on searching addresses in the Ireland map. There seems to be very good progress on address searching in mkgmap. Hopefully this will continue and these issues will get solved. Best Wishes, Cliff.
